Honoring Indigenous Psychedelic Wisdom
Honoring María Sabina and the Mazatec lineage through sacred mushroom ceremony and psilocybin therapy in California.
At MicroLove by Alexis, my work is guided by reverence, reciprocity, and truth. As psilocybin therapy in California becomes more popular and accepted, I feel it’s vital to share the deeper roots of this medicine and why honoring those roots matters more than ever.
I have never claimed to be Oaxaqueña, a descendant of María Sabina, or that she visits me in dreams. My intention has never been to profit from or exploit her story or the Mazatec people. I walk this path as a student - humbly learning, honoring, and uplifting Indigenous voices.
The portrait of María Sabina on my altar is not decoration - it is a reminder of the courageous lineage that held and protected these sacred mushrooms, Los Niños Santos, long before the Western world began calling them "psychedelics." When we sit together in mushroom ceremony in california, we name her, thank her, and remember her people - the Mazatec of Oaxaca, who paid a high price for the world’s curiosity.
María Sabina shared her medicine in good faith. In return, she was ostracized, her privacy violated, her home burned, and her son killed. The Western world took the mushrooms but ignored the cost. Fame, patents, and psychedelic revolutions followed - yet the Mazatec were left to carry the burden of extraction and exploitation.
To honor María Sabina is to tell the full truth. It is to speak up, even when it’s uncomfortable. It is to walk in psychedelic healing with integrity - recognizing where this wisdom comes from, who carried it forward, and what was lost along the way.
Without the resilience of Indigenous healers - especially the curanderos and curanderas of Oaxaca - none of us in this work would be here. And so, my commitment is simple: to honor the roots of this medicine, uplift Indigenous wisdom, and educate everyone who comes to ceremony about the history, the truth, and the responsibility we all share.
When you sit in ceremony with me, you are invited to reconnect not just with the mushrooms, but with the stories and lineages that held them sacred. That is what makes this more than just therapy - it’s healing that respects both land and lineage.
